Victorian Regional Focus: A look at Bendigo
In the 1850s life in Bendigo tried to mimic many cultural influences from Europe. The Europeans brought with them a lust for gold along with wine and food knowledge from Europe that infiltrated through the local community and helped build the reputation of the region as a wine growing community. Sadly, phylloxera decimated the region in the 1890s and the region as we now know it did not emerge again until the late 1960s.
The 2003 Seppelt Benno Bendigo Shiraz is sourced from the area West of the City of Bendigo, which we feel is significantly different from the fruit sourced East of the city of Bendigo, the area known as Heathcote. The vineyards are located on the alluvial river plains and red and brown earths and the shiraz vines produce intense fruit driven wine with plum and intense cherry like characteristics. Look out for the inaugural release of Benno in your local retailer or contact the Seppelt Cellar Door to discover how you can purchase some for yourself. For more information about the Bendigo wine region visit Bendigo Wine website.
